{"id":240,"date":"2024-08-16T18:39:54","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T16:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mailnjoy.com\/blog\/?post_type=glossary&#038;p=240"},"modified":"2024-10-22T18:01:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-22T16:01:00","slug":"sms","status":"publish","type":"glossary","link":"https:\/\/mailnjoy.com\/blog\/en\/glossary\/sms\/","title":{"rendered":"SMS"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\">SMS stands for \u201c<strong>Short Message Service<\/strong>\u201d<br \/><br \/>SMS is a digital communication method invented in 1992, enabling text messages to be exchanged between people using cell phones.<br \/>Commonly known as a \u201c<strong>text message<\/strong>\u201d, it&#8217;s a simple message (without emoticons or images), with a maximum size of 162 characters, that can be used on all cell phones, including the predecessors of today&#8217;s smartphones.<br \/><br \/>SMS should not be confused with MMS, which is an extension of SMS, and overcomes some of these limitations.<br \/><br \/>After being highly used in the early 2000s, SMS has since a lower interest and use, and is gradually being replaced by social networks and instant messaging applications (such as Whatsapp), which enable easier and less restricted group exchanges.<br \/>It is estimated that the peak of SMS technology was reached between 2014 and 2016, when no fewer than 200 billion SMS messages were exchanged in a country like France alone. Since then, it&#8217;s estimated that around 15% fewer SMS messages are exchanged each year worldwide.<br \/>Nevertheless, SMS is still <a href=\"https:\/\/mailnjoy.com\/blog\/en\/marketing-communication-sms-vs-email\/\">a very popular means of communication for companies<\/a>, who use it to canvass their customers and offer promotions
